Did you know the average American Kid today spends only 4 minutes a day outside? How in the world did this happen? When I was a child, staying inside was punishment. Most of us parents hated being inside, and we aren’t even that old! Were you one of those kids who was told you had to be inside once the street lights came on? Twenty years ago, it didn’t matter if you grew up in Rural, Urban, or Suburban America, everyone played OUTSIDE, but everything is different now, and as parents we have to work extra hard to create opportunities for our kids to learn what used to come naturally and play outside. In fact, I believe summer camp assists parents in creating those opportunities.
There is so much power in just being outside and experiencing God’s beautiful creation and being able to experience something new and adventurous. In fact, I believe now more than ever, that every kid should attend summer camp.
CHIEF’s TOP THREE Reasons Every Kid Should Attend Summer Camp
1. Try new adventures in a safe environment.
Think about all the adventures campers get to experience: shooting an arrow, sleeping outside, riding a horse for the first time, climbing a 50′ Tower, or maybe stomping through a creek while looking for salamanders.
2. Unplug from technology. Camp is REAL & TANGIBLE.
I have a secret for you, and your kids. As a Camp Director, I’ve never had a camper get hurt from being unplugged from technology. Just this past year, I had to discipline my daughter, by taking her iPod Touch away. You should have seen the look on her face! Well, I bet you can imagine! What’s fascinating is she never complains one bit about giving it up for camp. Camp allows kids to be truly connected. I love seeing kids who don’t know each other first connect in real, tangible way. I love it!
3. Camp is life-changing!
Whether you are a camper, staff member, or even the Director, life change happens at camp. You never know, you might meet your spouse at camp. Hint, hint… I sure did! The friendships and adventures you experience will last a life time. Or better yet, you just might meet your Lord and Savior!
Did you attend camp as a kid? Did you ever want to? What did you most love about CAMP? I believe now more than ever, every kid should attend camp. I could list about 97 more reasons, but we will stop there!
